Case Against 13-Year-Old Kayden Johnson Dismissed With Prejudice as Dr. Candice Matthews Demands Judicial Accountability

DALLAS, TX | October 22, 2026 — What began as a fight for justice ended in celebration Thursday as civil rights activist Dr. Candice Matthews gathered with family members and supporters outside the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center to announce that the criminal case against 13-year-old Kayden Johnson had been dismissed with prejudice.

According to Johnson's family, the dismissal order was signed Wednesday, October 21, allowing the teenager to finally return home after months of legal proceedings. A dismissal with prejudice means the case cannot be refiled on the same charges.

Johnson, who was just 12 years old when the allegations first surfaced, faced charges stemming from an alleged incident involving aggravated sexual assault and indecency with a child at a Life Time Fitness facility.

The case attracted public scrutiny after Johnson's trial ended in a mistrial on October 8, 2026.

Family Raises Concerns Over Evidence and Court Proceedings

During an October 14 press conference, Dr. Matthews joined Johnson's mother, Fawn Johnson, in raising serious concerns about the handling of evidence and the fairness of the judicial proceedings.

Fawn Johnson alleged that surveillance footage from the fitness facility demonstrated that her son had never been near the girl who made the allegations. She further claimed that jurors were presented with still images rather than the complete surveillance video.

The family also expressed concerns about Johnson's prolonged separation from his home, with his mother stating that he had been unable to return since January.

Following the mistrial, prosecutors offered a plea agreement that would have reduced the charges to a misdemeanor. According to Dr. Matthews, the proposed agreement would have required Johnson to register as a sex offender.

The family rejected the offer and continued demanding a complete dismissal.

From Protest to Celebration

A pretrial hearing had originally been scheduled for Thursday, October 22. However, after learning that the case had been dismissed, Dr. Matthews and supporters transformed their planned demonstration into a celebration.

Johnson attended the gathering alongside his family and confirmed that he had returned home.

His father, Thomas Johnson, expressed gratitude to the family's attorney, community advocates, and everyone who supported his son throughout the proceedings.

Dr. Matthews Calls for Judge's Removal

Despite the dismissal, Dr. Matthews emphasized that her efforts to seek accountability are far from over.

During Thursday's press briefing, she called for Judge Sheryl Lee Shannon, who presided over Johnson's case, to resign or be removed from the bench.

Matthews also announced that complaints had been filed concerning the judge, the district attorney's office, and the court reporter over alleged irregularities involving evidence disclosure and court records.

Additionally, Matthews said she had connected the Johnson family with a civil rights attorney and that the family intended to pursue federal litigation.

Another mother, Dominique Johnson, also spoke at the gathering about a separate, ongoing legal dispute involving Judge Shannon. She alleged difficulties obtaining court records and having her filings addressed.

The allegations raised against the judge and other court officials remain claims made by the families and advocates, rather than established findings of misconduct.

A Victory for the Family, but Calls for Accountability Continue

For Kayden Johnson and his family, the dismissal represents the end of a difficult legal battle that drew public attention and prompted questions about the juvenile justice system.

For Dr. Matthews, however, the outcome marks only one step in a broader effort to seek accountability from the officials involved.

While Thursday's gathering celebrated Johnson's return home and the dismissal of his case, Matthews made clear that she intends to continue pursuing complaints and demanding greater scrutiny of the judicial proceedings.

The case's dismissal brings the prosecution of Johnson to an end, but the family's concerns about how the case was handled remain unresolved.
