Whats Up With The Purple Curbs In Downtown and Midtown

HOUSTON, TX — The City of Houston has launched a new Smart Loading Zone pilot program aimed at improving curb access, reducing congestion, and making loading and unloading more efficient in some of the city’s busiest areas.

The 18-month pilot program, announced by ParkHouston, will bring technology-enabled loading zones to Downtown and Midtown Houston. The zones are designed primarily for commercial loading and unloading and are part of the city’s broader effort to modernize curb management as demand for limited curb space continues to grow.

According to the city, the Smart Loading Zones will use sensor-based camera technology and license plate recognition to identify vehicles using designated loading areas. The technology is being powered by Automotus.

The designated curb areas will be painted purple to indicate that they are special loading zones. The zones will operate Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Unlike traditional parking or loading areas, drivers will not need to use a pay station, permit, or mobile app at the curb. Instead, drivers can register their vehicles online, set up an account, and connect a payment method. Once registered, the license plate recognition system will automatically bill the account for time spent in the Smart Loading Zone.

City officials say the program is intended to improve turnover in loading zones, reduce congestion and double parking in busy corridors, support businesses and commercial deliveries, and use data to improve curb management operations.

“Houston’s curb space serves many different needs, including deliveries, rideshare activity, pedestrians, and traffic movement,” said Administration & Regulatory Affairs Director Tina Paez. “This pilot will use technology to improve curb access, reduce congestion, support public safety initiatives, and improve efficiency.”

The city says the data collected through the program will help officials better understand how curb space is being used and identify possible improvements to traffic flow and loading operations.

Drivers who use the Smart Loading Zones can register their vehicles online at curbpass.io/houston. The pilot officially began on June 2, 2026.

The City of Houston says it will work with businesses, drivers, and community stakeholders throughout the pilot program to evaluate its effectiveness and determine whether changes or future improvements are needed.
