HFD Called After Dr Candice Matthews Finds Gas Leak at Horrific Vance Plaza Apartments
HOUSTON, TX – Dr. Candice Matthews toured the Vance Plaza Apartments, also known as Vance Gardens, at 7301 Jensen Drive alongside residents who say they have been living in dangerous and unhealthy conditions. The walkthrough comes as Houston begins increasing pressure on apartment owners through the city’s newly approved anti-slumlord enforcement efforts.
Residents guided Matthews through the complex and pointed out what they described as severe maintenance and safety problems throughout the property. Complaints included mold, plumbing failures, sewage issues, pest infestations, deteriorating stairways, water damage, and exposed structural areas around several apartment units.
Several tenants also shared personal concerns during the visit. One resident claimed management attempted to evict her following a disagreement involving rent payments, though she stated the case was later dismissed in court. Another resident alleged tenants lost access to their mail after mailbox service was interrupted and relocated.
During the walkthrough, Matthews and residents reported smelling natural gas near one of the apartment buildings. According to people at the scene, the odor appeared to be coming from an area near a gas meter. The Houston Fire Department was contacted after those present said they could both smell and hear what they believed to be an active gas leak. Firefighters later arrived at the property, and CenterPoint Energy was reportedly notified.
Matthews warned apartment owners across Houston that increased enforcement and public exposure are coming for properties accused of neglecting residents. She stated that city officials are expected to visit the property as additional complaints and inspections continue moving forward.
