Harris County Deputy Shoots Armed Man Following Family Disturbance and House Fire Near Humble
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - A Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a man Wednesday afternoon after authorities say he emerged from a burning home armed with two knives during a lengthy standoff in the Humble area.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Morning Dove Drive and Redbird Ridge Drive after deputies responded to a reported family disturbance.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, deputies arrived to find a woman outside the home who said she had been assaulted by her son. Authorities said the woman had visible injuries, including a knot on her head and a laceration to her face. She declined transportation to a hospital but was treated at the scene.
Investigators said the man barricaded himself inside the residence for approximately 90 minutes and refused repeated commands to come outside. During the standoff, deputies observed smoke coming from the home after the man allegedly set the interior of the residence on fire. Officials said deputies were considering forcing entry to rescue the man from the burning home.
According to investigators, the garage door then opened and the man exited holding two knives. A 31-year-old deputy with seven years of service fired his weapon, striking the man in the upper torso. Deputies immediately rendered medical aid until EMS arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. No deputies were injured during the encounter.
Authorities said there is a history of prior incidents at the residence, but they have not released additional details because the investigation remains ongoing. The Texas Rangers are expected to investigate the deputy-involved shooting, which is standard procedure, while Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials also said body-worn camera footage will be reviewed and is expected to be released in accordance with department policy.
The identities of the deputy and the injured man have not been publicly released.
